Bob, I was sorry to hear of your Dad's death. I remember him coming to the high school in June 1968 to ask for summer driver ed students at Albany State, and I signed up. He was very personable and we each had one student per new Oldsmobile, with three undergrad driver ed teachers in each car, under your Dad's supervision. It was a ground-breaking program, and I benefited so much from be allowed to do full-on braking skids and slalom competitions. He also introduced us to the new 60s technology driving simulators. Although such a loss for you, seeing your Dad's notice has brought back a lot of memories of school days together in band and riding around together in friends' cars. He lived a very full life, influenced people for good, and I'm sure will be very much missed, particularly for you, your Mum, you brothers and your families. Matt Hammann

I was one of Dr Ellis’ Traffic Safety students at SUNYA IN 1970-71 and in grad school in summer of 1973. The impact he has on my career is immense. I now own and operate Taconic Driving School in Hudson. I totally owe this to Dr Ellis. He was a unique individual, with his crew cut and basically conservative views and me and most of his students as long haired hippies. We had many laughs and also did some serious work to prepare us to be driving instructors, including obtaining our motorcycle license. When asked who at SUNYA influenced my career..Dr Ellis is number one on my list.
My deepest condolences to his family. He lives on through his students, like me. RIP Doc.

I first met Dr. Ellis in 1981 when I began working for the NYSDMV. I immediately appreciated and valued each and every time we met. Also, I worked briefly for him in the Impaired Driver Program, and will remember him as a kind, generous, and giving man.
Dick, thank you for your tireless work in the field of Driver Safety. You were one of a kind, and one of the best..
My condolences to Lee and the entire Ellis family.

When I was a teenager I knew him simply as Mr. Ellis, my friend Rogers Dad. Later in life I had the opportunity to work with him through my employment at the DMV. My sincerest condolences to Lee, Roger and family

Lee, I am so sorry to hear of Dick's passing. Many is a memory of being with you both with my mother, the Smiths, the Alberts and the Ryans at some square dance on a Saturday night. I will remember the trip to Falmouth, MA where we felt we would never get there and Dick saying, "just one more roundabout to go". Thank you both for being a part of my childhood.
