Obituary of George R. Estel

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

George Estel, 73, died in the arms of his beloved “bride,” Judy DeLorenzo, in the comfort of his home after a brief illness.  Also by his side was his dear cousin, Pam.

After receiving his graduate degree from RPI, George began a long career with New York State, initially for 20+ years with the Department of Health, and after 9/11 with the Office of Homeland Security, retiring in 2010.

George was gloriously happy in his new full time occupation of retirement.  He and Judy traveled extensively to their bucket list destinations, played with and pampered their precious canine companions, and enjoyed celebratory gatherings with friends and family.  Then, there was the garden.  He spent hours each day working (really, playing) in his legendary, (almost always) meticulously tended veggie garden, that looked more like a small farm. In winter months he planned for the next year’s garden,

and built raised stone beds for Judy’s flowers.  He was especially pleased with the roadside corner flower garden that greeted the Crow Ridge neighbors.

George had a passion for golf.  Nearly daily, from April through November he could be found in the early morning hours at Orchard Creek Golf Course, enjoying the game and the companionship of the many friends he made over the years.

When George and Judy married nearly49 years ago, George became part of a large, loving, extended family who he thought of as his own.  He is survived by many special cousins, his caring sister-in-law, Mary,  and nieces Amy and Joy.  He also leaves behind many wonderful, supportive friends.  J.B., you are so very special.

George and Judy are grateful for the 13 years of compassionate care from NYOH staff, and most especially to Dr Charles “Charlie” Weissman and Dr. Adrianna Lisinschi.  George faced his treatments and setbacks with grace, dignity and determination, but never a complaint.

At George’s request, there will be no services.

If you would like to honor George’s memory in a special way, consider planting or expanding a veggie garden and share the bounty with your loved ones and local food pantry.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Peppertree Rescue  or City Mission of Schenectady would be appreciated.
