Obituary of Alfred K. Schmitt
Colonie - Alfred "Al" Schmitt, 92, passed away August 19, 2022 at Daughters of Sarah in Albany where he moved from Millview Residence in Latham. Born on April 27, 1930, Al was a native to Albany, and eventually made his home in Colonie. He also enjoyed spending time at his camp on Cossayuna Lake. Despite being a quiet private man, Al's kind heart and sweet demeanor led to him being well-liked by all those who cared for him.
Al was a graduate of Vincention Institute and a Navy veteran. He proudly spoke of his service in the Navy Occupation of Europe, including as a gunnersmate on the USS Columbus CA 74. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Al had a long career with the New York State Thruway Authority and enjoyed speaking of the famous and everyday people he met as a courier throughout the state. He is of proud German heritage and loved his family, his dogs, and valued his lifelong friendships.
He is predeceased by his parents, Karl and Mary Schmitt, his brother Frank Schmitt, sister Martha Denninger, in-laws Peter A. Denninger and Frances Schmitt, nephew Paul F. Denninger and his love of 43 years, Faith Tomisman. He is survived by the daughter and grandson of his heart, Joyce and Zachary (Tomisman) Jones, and adoring nephew and nieces, David P. Denninger, Mary Ann Denninger, Colleen Schmitt and Marlene Schmitt Colclough. Alfred is also survived by lifelong friends, Sister Mary Aiden and Thomas Traegler.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at Christ Our Light Church, 1 Maria Dr., Loudonville. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Colonie.
