Obituary of Gregory E. Burgoon
VOORHEESVILLE – Gregory E. Burgoon passed away on October 14, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was born on December 31, 1952, son of William Leo and Margaret Burgoon, in Sharon, CT. Greg was a 1970 graduate of Clayton A. Bouton High School, Voorheesville. NY. He was an excellent three sport high school athlete playing soccer, basketball and baseball. For more than 40 years Greg worked at Albany Mack/Truck Sales as a truck parts manager. He was a lifetime member of the Voorheesville Fire Department serving over 40 years holding various offices including Assistant Chief. In 2006 Greg was named the Firefighter of the Year by the Voorheesville Fire Department. In the same year Greg was honored as Fireman of the Year by the Albany County Volunteer Firemen’s Association. Greg continued to be an active member of the fire company until the time of his death. In his spare time he was an avid golfer and bowler. He was a 16 year survivor of cancer which he battled with courage and grace.
He is survived by his son Mathew William Peter and his wife Annie along with his siblings Kathleen Valente, Sherry Burgoon (Joerg), Bill Burgoon (Mary), Patty Miller (Doug), and Steve Burgoon (Christine). He is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews and his Voorheesville Fire Department family. The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Urken’s medical team at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City, Dr. Nini Wu, at New York Oncology and Hematology and the many caretakers who provided for his care over the years.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours at the Reilly and Son Funeral Home, 9 Voorheesville Avenue in Voorheesville, on Wednesday, October 17, from 4 to 8 PM. A Celebration of Greg’s life will take place on Thursday, October 18, 2018, beginning at 5 PM with a sharing of memories at 6:15 PM at the Voorheesville Fire Department, 12 Altamont Road, Voorheesville, NY.
