Obituary of Thomas F. Smyth, Jr.

Please share a memory of Thomas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Colonie - On March 20, 2017 Thomas Francis Smyth Jr. entered into eternal life surrounded by his loving family. He will be reunited with Mary, his loving wife of 49 years and his beloved son Thomas. He was 88 years old.

Born in Albany, Thomas was the son of the late Thomas and Katherine (Murphy) Smyth. He attended St. James Catholic grade school and Christian Brothers Academy. He retired from Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation in 1988 after 38 years working in the gas department. He made many friends during his career and enjoyed his regular pension club meetings and get togethers. After retirement, he enjoyed volunteering with the City of Albany, providing city tours for school groups and was an ambassador for the Albany First Night. Tom also helped with the food pantry at Our Lady of Mercy Church and was a Eucharistic minister along with being a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Albany, NY.

Tom was cherished by his children and grandchildren, attending all of their sporting activities, music concerts, plays, award ceremonies and graduations.

Tom was a dedicated husband and father and was pre-deceased by his wife, Mary Margaret (Schauman) Smyth, his son, Thomas Francis Smyth III, who died suddenly in 1978, his infant grand daughter, Rachel Passmann and his sister Mary (Smyth) Hallock. Tom worked hard all his life and loved spending time with his family, especially at his favorite vacation destination; Cape May, NJ when his children and grandchildren were all together. A wonderful husband, father, and grandfather – a true gentleman and he will be greatly missed.

Tom is survived by his loving children: three daughters: Eileen (Thomas) Papa, Susan (Michael) Passmann, Peggy (Bill) Bonneau, all of Colonie, NY and one son, Michael (Carla) Smyth of North Wales, PA. He also leaves behind his 10 cherished grandchildren: Elyssa, Michelle and Thomas (Marika) Papa, Sarah ( Michael) LaRose, Amy Passmann, Michael, Matthew and Jack Smyth, Billy and Mary Bonneau, two great grandchildren, Grace LaRose and Cash Papa, one cousin, Thomas Murphy and many nieces and nephews.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at the Marjorie Doyle Rockwell Assisted Living Facility where he lived with grace and dignity for the past year. A special thank you to the staff at Samaritan Hospital for their care and comfort the past few weeks. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 23 at Reilly and Son Funeral Home, Colonie. Relatives and friends are invited to a mass of Christian Burial on Friday, March 24 at 12:30 pm, at Christ our Light Catholic Church, 1 Maria Drive, Loudonville, NY. Internment will follow at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie, NY.
The family ask that you consider donations in Toms memory to the Alzheimer's Association Northeastern NY, 4 Pinewest Plaza, Suite 405, Albany, NY 12205
