Colonie - Denise M. Guerin, 71, died Monday, January 24, 2011. She was born to the late Dr. Louis Chatel and Jeanne Chatel in Montreal, Canada on November 24, 1939. Though her lifelong struggle with diabetes and its complications confounded many of her personal plans, she was supremely passionate about helping others - working as a student nurse, language instructor, hospital volunteer, teacher's aide, writer, French translator for a psychology journal, adult literacy volunteer and diabetic educator.
She was a loving, caring wife and mother. In 2005, the Jocelyn clinic honored her with an award for living with diabetes for 50 years. Denise was an active member of Unity Church in Albany, the Insulin Pumpers Group and the Cathedral Food bank.
Denise is survived by her husband, Charles F. Guerin; son, Charles L. Guerin; sister, Louise Long; and brothers, Jean-Louis Chatel and Jacques Chatel.
Denise's funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, January 30, 2011 at the Reilly & Son Funeral Home, Colonie. Calling hours will be at the funeral home Saturday from 5 - 8 pm and Sunday from 1 - 3 pm, prior to the service. Interment will be in the Gerald B.H.Solomon National Cemetery at 2:00 pm on Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 6 Greenwood Dr # 1A, East Greenbush, NY 12061-2036
