Delmar - Joan Ferguson Mullen, 95, of Delmar NY died peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany on April 6 2026.  She was born on July 16, 1930 in New York NY.

Joan raised four children and was an “extra mother or grandmother“ to many.  She was a classical guitarist and singer who taught at the College of St. Rose and privately in her home. 

A Spanish enthusiast, she was a world traveller who frequented Mexico, South and Central America and Spain.  An avid hiker, she especially loved Patagonia and the Adirondacks where she climbed the 46 high peaks.  She was a long time folk dancer, viol player and important part of several musical groups in the Capital District.  She readily opened her home for musical and festive gatherings and will be missed by many friends and neighbors.

Joan is survived by her daughter Nancy Rafanelli, son Paul Utterback, and grandson Christopher Morgan.

A memorial service for friends and family will be held on Sunday April 19 at 2pm at the First United Methodist Church, 428 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar NY.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Bethlehem Public Library or other charity of choice.
