Karen O'Neil Curren Obituary

Karen O’Neil Curren, Age 83, of Voorheesville, NY passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Friday, January 2 at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center.

Karen was born in Albany, the daughter of the late Francis and Margaret O’Neil. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 30 years, Edward F. Curren Jr. The family made their home for many years in Clifton Park, NY and later in Altamont, NY.

Karen was a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Names in Albany, Class of 1960. She continued her education at Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts, and later earned her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the College of Saint Rose in Albany. Karen went on to build a successful career as a Realtor in the Albany area.

Deeply committed to service and community involvement, she served as President of the Albany Chapter of the Junior League from 1977–1978 and remained a lifelong sustainer, was a Board Member of the Hospitality House Addiction Treatment Center and volunteered as a literacy instructor in the Albany County Correctional Facilities. She was a communicant at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Voorheesville and longtime member of the Voorheesville Garden Club. After retirement Karen was President of the Guilderland Chapter of the AARP. Karen loved to travel, touring Ireland, England and Italy and visiting 46 of the 50 states, many alongside her longtime companion, Thomas Kernan. She held a special place in her heart for the Adirondacks, where she maintained a home for many years, and cherished the tradition of yearly family vacations to Cape Cod, surrounded by all of her grandchildren.

Karen leaves behind her devoted children, Elizabeth Weatherwax (Scott) of Clifton Park, Timothy Curren (Kathryn) of Voorheesville, and Sarah Barile (Michael) of Queens, and her longtime companion Thomas Kernan. In addition, she will be missed by her five grandchildren, Noah and Benjamin Kosloske, Daniel and Christopher Curren and Gloria Barile.

The family would like to thank the staff at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland for their attentive care during Karen’s long illness.

Services will be private per the family's request and a celebration of Karen’s life will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to The Living Resources Foundation, 300 Washington Avenue Extension, Albany, NY 12203-7303 or https://www.livingresources.org/make-a-donation/.
